One of my favorite steam-ables lately is the Archer Farms black beluga lentils.
90 seconds and...Bing. Bang. Boom. I'm adding healthy lentils to my salad, or whatever, for lunch.
Here are some variations I make after steaming them, adding some sauteed red onion, a little olive oil, and some picante sauce: a) on flatbread with hummus, slaw mix + fresh cilantro, b) on flatbread w/diced tomato & feta, c) on a Wasa cracker w/guacamole & tomato.
At Target, next to the dried beans and rice.

I've talked with a few people lately that still refuse to cook with microwaves, isn't that amazing?! I agree with Mark Bittman in this video, using a microwave for steaming vegetables is extremely useful, especially when you're in a rush.
QUICK microwave facts:
QUICK microwave facts:
- Really the same as sauteing or heating up in the pan, only quicker; there is some loss of B & C vitamins but not much (not > 10%)
- It's the duration, how high the heat, & how much water it's cooked in that matters most=stick to the directions on times/low/med/high intensity
- Don't over do the water it's cooked in because that's where most of the vitamins that are lost go-the water. If it's broccoli or something like that, I usually pour the water back over the vegetable when I'm done.
- *BEST* way to get all the nutrients you need from vegetables--->Eat them in a variety of ways-cooked and raw :)

I have never tried black lentils! Is there any difference in flavor from the common brown ones?
